Your heating and cooling system plays a key part in keeping your home comfortable all-year-round, which is why it should be at the top of your maintenance list. One simple way to take care of it is to clean the outdoor HVAC unit. With the proper tools, you can take the DIY route as long as you observe safety precautions.
Air Pro Inc., your dependable air conditioning repair service provider, lists the steps for cleaning it below:Turn it off. First, turn off the power to the unit. Make sure everything is switched off, from the exterior condenser or compressor to the breaker box. Afterward, you can proceed with cleaning.
Remove debris. Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the fasteners. Raise the fan grill from the top of the unit, then get rid of any leaves, twigs and other debris by hand or with a vacuum that has a soft-bristled brush attachment.
Clean and straighten the fins. Using a strong stream of water from a garden hose, wash the fins from the inside out to remove any dirt and debris from between them. If there’s too much dirt, then it might be best to leave this to an air conditioning contractor. If you notice that the fins are bent, carefully straighten them with a fin comb, butter knife or other thin object.
Clean around the unit. You should also clear leaves and twigs out from around the outside of the condenser, as well as trim branches and bushes back at least three feet from the equipment. This not only allows for adequate airflow around the unit, it also prevents fires caused by the debris.
Change the filter. Any furnace repair professional would recommend replacing the AC filter at least twice a year. If they accumulate dirt quickly, you might need to change them more often.
Clean the condenser coil. Check the condenser coil for debris buildup and vacuum it up. Be careful not to damage or bend the coils when vacuuming them. Once you’ve removed as much dirt as possible, you can rinse it with a garden hose to clean off any remaining debris.
